Bass Coast offers a wide variety of places to fish, there are piers, rock walls, open water beaches, back beaches and a river.
From our store, the closest boat ramp is located at Newhaven, a quick drive across Phillip Island bridge. There is also a newly renovated ramp at Rhyll, and Cowes. For those fishing off the Island there are ramps at Corinella and Inverloch.
There is so many different species and a lot of different baits to go with them, you almost can't go wrong. For beaches and rocks use baits like Pilchards, Bluebait, Squid. For piers use Squid, Bluebait or peeled prawn.
For general fishing around the Island the majority of species you will be chasing are on the bottom. You will be using a paternoster rig which is 2 hooks and a sinker on the bottom. You can also do lure fishing in various places, metal lures for Salmon, squid jigs to catch Calamari.
We always say "The best time to go fishing is when you have time" the other time of day to go fishing is an hour either side of either tide. Why? because it is the easiest, being an island we have a lot of current which can make fishing hard. When fishing for species like Squid, the best time to can some times be on the change of light (Sunrise, Sunset).
Lifejackets are now require by law at Punchbowl, Bore Beach, Pyramid rock when fishing from the rocks.
